What is Sun Lounger?
A sunlounger (British "sun lounger") is a chair-like device, typically placed in a patio, garden, or swimming pool deck, or used as beach-side outdoor furniture. They are often constructed from wood, formed plastic, or metal and indoor fabrics. They have designed adjustable backs for people to lie down, or sit up on, (recline) while relaxing. Somewhat like a deckchair and bed-like in nature, the rear surface can be up to allow the user to sit up and read, or it can be reclined to a flat surface to allow sleeping in the horizontal position (supine and prone position).
Advantages of Sun Lounger
Controllable
Probably one of the biggest advantages of sun loungers, especially over the natural sun, is that they’re controllable. They put users in charge of their level of exposure, which isn’t always possible on sunny days when there is a lack of shade. Today’s sun loungers are designed with integrated safety controls such as built-in timers that automatically power down the appliance following a short session to prevent burning and skin damage and give users more control over their tanning outcomes. You can’t simply turn the sun off!
Customisable
Another big advantage that sun loungers have over natural sun exposure is that they can often be customised to tailor the light output exactly to your needs. While light from the sun comprises of roughly 95% UVA and 5% UVB, the lamps on some modern sun loungers can be swapped as needed to expose the skin to different forms of light. Collagen-boosting red light tanning is becoming increasingly popular, for example, while green therapy lamps have been shown to help improve the skin’s appearance.
Health-supporting
What many people don’t realise is that UV light has the same impact on biological processes regardless of whether it comes from a natural or artificial source. So the health benefits of natural sunlight - a boost in Vitamin D production, reduced inflammation, an improvement in skin conditions, lowered blood pressure, and better heart health, for example - can be replicated through sun lounger use. The advantage of this is that these benefits can be maintained over winter when there is less natural UV.
Mood-Boosting
Sunlight has long been known to impact mood. So much so, in fact, that there’s even a medical term for the ‘winter blues’ - seasonal affective disorder - and in some people the symptoms can be severe. Research suggests that sun loungers can mimic the natural mood-boosting qualities of the sun, with studies showing that users typically report feeling less upset, irritable, nervous, jittery, and afraid following a tanning session, while also feeling more positive, more interested, and more engaged in aspects of daily life.
Relaxing
While there’s nothing better than that relaxing feeling you get while laying in the soft sand on the Spanish coast, sun loungers offer a very affordable and very convenient way to create a calming environment for unwinding at home. Contemporary sun loungers often feature advanced built-in entertainment options - everything from mood lighting to integrated sound systems and even TV screens - to make it easy for you to enjoy some much-needed ‘me time’, unwinding away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Types of Sun Lounger
Fixed or Folding
Folding chairs have a couple of great benefits. First, they can fold up to take less space on your patio when not in use. Second, the ability to fold makes them more portable. It’s always easier to move around a folding piece of furniture than one that doesn’t fold, wheels or not.
Fully Flat Sunbeds
Sunbeds that are flat, or adjust to a flat position, are great for tanning on your stomach, or setting your book on the patio and reading it facing downwards. These are popular models (especially the adjustable ones) and are available in all materials.
S-Shaped Loungers
S-shaped sun loungers are designed to follow the curves of your body, and often give better support for those with lower back problems. The usual materials for these chairs are aluminium and textilene.
Multi-Position Recliners
These chairs are very versatile, allowing for everything from an upright sitting position to a deep recline – though they do not usually go completely flat. They often come with wide armrests and other options to increase comfort.
Material of Sun Lounger
Resin
Many prefer the appearance of resin-made furniture because it can produce more modern styles than PVC – and can mimic rattan. Check when buying whether it is moulded or woven. Moulded is cheaper, but woven will have a more realistic effect. As with PVC, don’t forget ample cushions.
Aluminium
Aluminium is often used for the frame of sin loungers because it is light, looks good, and does not rust. It is an excellent choice for sun lounger frames of a variety of styles.
PVC
PVC is durable, requires almost no maintenance, and is usually a good price. The material will soak up a lot of heat from the sun though, so be sure you have a cushion that provides full coverage for those hot days of summer!
Wooden
Wood sun loungers look great, whether they are made from teak, pine, acacia or other woods. They do, however, require regular maintenance to keep them looking good over more than one or two seasons.
What are the seating areas made from?
Textilene is the most common material for making the fabric portion of sun loungers that are frames with aluminium or other stiff products. It is flexible, holds up well to weather, and can come in many colours. It is made by weaving PVC fibres.
Mattresses and cushions
Available in different sizes and colours, sun lounger mattresses and cushions are designed with comfort in mind. It's a good idea to go for cushions with removable covers for easy cleaning. Cushions or mattresses are essential for materials like wood but add real comfort to more comfortable materials like rattan. To ensure your lounger mattresses and cushions last, store them somewhere dry when they are not in use.
Sun lounger covers
Sun lounger covers allow you to protect your lounger from UV rays and various weather conditions. They are recommended for use over the winter if you cannot take your sun lounger indoors.
Sun shades
Sunshades help to shield your eyes from the sun and act as a sort of mini parasol. Be sure to pay close attention to the material used as not all fabrics will protect from UV rays.

Choosing the Perfect Sun Lounger
Material Choices
The build quality of your sun lounger significantly impacts its comfort and longevity. Options range from natural wood like teak and acacia, which blend seamlessly into an outdoor setting, to metal and plastic, which offer modern aesthetics and easy maintenance. Remember, materials also dictate the maintenance required to keep the loungers looking their best.
Cushioning and Support
A sun lounger should support your body comfortably for prolonged periods. Look for loungers with padded cushions or adjustable backrests to cater to different lounging preferences.
Aesthetic and Style
The design of your sun lounger should complement your existing garden decor. Whether you're drawn to minimalistic modern designs or classic, ornate styles, choose a lounger that reflects your personality and enhances your space.
Additional Features
Features like adjustable backrests, built-in sunshades, and wheels for easy portability are not just luxuries but functional attributes that enhance your garden lounging experience.
Size and Layout
Consider the size of your outdoor space and how the sun lounger will fit. Account for its footprint when reclined, ensuring it harmonizes with the flow and layout of your garden.
5 Tips for Keeping Your Sun Lounger in Top Shape
Regular cleaning
Cleaning your sun lounger regularly is essential. Start by removing any loose dirt, leaves, or debris from the surface. If your lounger is made of plastic, use a mixture of mild soap and water to wipe it clean. Use a soft brush or cloth to get rid of stubborn stains. For fabric or mesh loungers, follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions and avoid using harsh cleaners. Rinse everything thoroughly with water and let it dry completely before using or storing.
Protect from sun and weather
Although sun loungers are designed for outdoor use, prolonged exposure to sunlight and harsh weather can still cause damage. Whenever possible, place your lounger in a shaded area to minimize direct sunlight. If shade is limited, consider using an umbrella or canopy for extra protection. When not in use, cover your sun lounger with a weather-resistant cover or store it in a covered area. This will prevent fading, discoloration, and damage caused by rain, wind, and UV rays.
Check and tighten fasteners
Over time, the screws, bolts, and fasteners on your sun lounger may become loose due to regular use or exposure to the elements. Check your lounger periodically for any loose or missing fasteners and tighten them as needed. Use the right tools, like a screwdriver or wrench, to ensure that everything is secure and stable. This simple maintenance task will prevent accidents and keep your lounger in good shape.
Repair or replace damaged parts
Inspect your sun lounger for any cracks, tears, or broken components. In general, this type of damage is not covered under a warranty as it can occur due to regular wear and tear. If you're unsure, check your warranty information before attempting any repairs. Depending on the material and severity of the damage, you may be able to fix or replace the affected parts. Use outdoor adhesive or epoxy to mend cracks or breaks in plastic loungers. For fabric or mesh loungers, consider patching or sewing minor tears or replacing the fabric if necessary. This can be far most cost effective than simply binning them. Taking care of damages promptly will extend the lifespan of your lounger and ensure your comfort and safety.
Store properly in colder months
When summer comes to an end, it's important to store your sun lounger properly. Clean and dry it thoroughly before storing to prevent the growth of mould, mildew, or rust. If your lounger has collapsible or detachable parts, disassemble them and store them in a dry and secure place. If space is limited, consider getting stackable or foldable sun loungers that can be stored easily without taking up much room. Remember to keep them away from extreme temperatures and humidity to maintain their quality.
Evaluating the Key Features of Sun Loungers
Adjustability: The ability to adjust the backrest angle is essential for customising comfort. Many loungers offer multiple recline positions, while some even allow full-flat configurations for sunbathing or napping.
Materials: Sun loungers are constructed from a variety of materials. Metal, typically aluminium or steel, provides a sturdy frame while remaining relatively lightweight. Wood, such as teak or acacia, offers a classic look, but requires more maintenance. Plastic or resin loungers are affordable and weather-resistant but may lack the elegance of other materials.
Cushioning: If comfort is a priority, consider loungers with padded cushions. They should be made from high-quality, weather-resistant fabric that won't fade or degrade under the sun.
Portability: For those who like to chase the sun or shade, look for loungers with wheels or lightweight designs that can be easily moved around the garden or pool area.
Space-saving: Some sun loungers are stackable or foldable, which is particularly advantageous for storage during off-season months or for those with limited space.
Accessories: Additional features such as sun canopies, side tables, or drink holders enhance the lounging experience and offer added convenience while relaxing outdoors.
Maintenance: Consider the ease of cleaning and maintaining the lounger. Those with removable and washable cushion covers or durable and easy-to-wipe material frames simplify upkeep.
How to Get Mould Off Sun Loungers
Put on Rubber Gloves
Before you begin cleaning your sun loungers, it’s important to put on rubber gloves to protect your hands from any potentially harmful chemicals.
Mix a Cleaning Solution
Mix together equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. This solution is a natural cleaner that is effective at removing mould and disinfecting surfaces.
Spray the Sun Loungers
Spray the cleaning solution onto the sun loungers, making sure to cover all areas with mould. Let the solution sit for 15-20 minutes.
Scrub the Sun Loungers
Using a scrub brush or sponge, scrub the sun loungers thoroughly, paying special attention to any areas with mould. Rinse with water and repeat if necessary.
Apply Baking Soda
Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a paste. Apply the paste to any remaining mould spots and cover with cling film plastic wrap. Let the paste sit overnight.
Rinse and Dry
The next day, rinse the baking soda paste off with water and dry the sun loungers with a towel or let them air dry in the sun. If you find the the mould or mildew just won’t come off your sun lounger cushions then it maybe time to replace them. Although cleaning should work, heavily soiled cushions may be past their best.
Setting up Sun Loungers for Guests
Placement
Consider the placement of your sun loungers carefully. Place them in a spot that receives ample sunlight but also provides some shade, like under a tree or an umbrella. Arrange the loungers in a way that maximizes the view of the outdoor scenery and promotes social interaction among guests.
Comfort
Add cushions or padding to your sun loungers to increase comfort and encourage guests to relax for longer periods. Provide blankets or throws for chilly evenings or early morning hours.
Accessories
Consider providing guests with some accessories that will enhance their sun lounger experience, such as sunscreen, insect repellent, and a refreshing drink. A small side table or tray can also be provided for guests to place their drinks and snacks.
Privacy
Consider adding some privacy features around your sun loungers to give guests a sense of seclusion and intimacy. This can be achieved by adding a privacy screen, plants, or fencing.
Lighting
Add some lighting to your outdoor space to allow guests to enjoy the sun loungers even after the sun has set. String lights, lanterns, or outdoor lamps can create a cozy and inviting atmosphere for guests.
